To kick off the new year we thought we’d blog about a little logo we’ve designed for the upcoming series of ‘Twestival‘ events happening in cities across the globe this February. Twestival is a get together for people who use Twitter with the aim of providing a fun regional meetup for people to network with others in their city, and to raise money for charity : water. Cities so far include Edinburgh, Bucharest, Amsterdam, Bangkok, Lisbon, Brussels, Sydney, Boston, Bejing and San Francisco to name but a few! Twestivals will be happening on February 12th and you can follow @twestival on twitter or visit twestival.com to register your own interest.
Now for the bit we need help with. We’re really keen to help organise a Birmingham Twestival and need others to volunteer to see it happen. So far Ellie Lovell and Jess Elvidge have been in touch to lend a hand, but we’ll need a few more people if possible to make it happen. So, if you’re from Birmingham, on twitter and like the sound of a Twestival let us know and we’ll try and kick things off. If you drop a comment below as a first step we can guage ideas about people/venues etc and then move the conversation off to a board elsewhere if it looks feasible.

Yup, so far everything’s planned for the 12th Feb. Should be getting some more info shortly so will keep everyone updated.
Am happy to help out with the twestival. The 12th of Feb is quite short notice to make things happen but then only the impossible is worth the effort!
The 12th is certainly close, but I think if we can get a venue sorted we’ll be pretty much there! Have registered @brumtwestival for people who are interested to follow as more details get confirmed. Awaiting more info from @twestival as to the specifics of what the event should look like.

I reckon somewhere like The Rainbow would be a pretty cool venue for Twestival although of course we will need to check availability, capacity etc fairly quickly. We could do with having a shortlist of suggestions so we can start looking in to options… any other ideas?

Somewhere in the Arcadian like Poppy Red or Sobar? St Paul’s Square – I tried The Rectory recently and reckon that would be a good place for it. Jamhouse would probably be too busy on a Thursday. Can’t really think of any potential suggestions on Broad St?

Glad to see this sounds like it could happen! Great suggestions everyone. I’m going to phone some venues tomorrow, so roughly what turn out do people think we’ll be looking at? Brumtwestival now has 33 followers on twitter so should we aim for 100-150 people once word gets around? I think Arcadian could be a good central location too and could work well for people coming from all over Birmingham. If people have any alternate suggestions/reasons not to go for a ‘bar’ type venue then please do say – it’s everyones event!
Based on Amanda’s comment it sounds like we could do with finding people to volunteer as sponsors, and people in general to come up with ideas for fundraising on the night. I think if people could be identified by their twitter names (if it’s different to your normal name) on the night then that could be fun and encourage more conversations. I for one haven’t met face to face half the people I follow and am looking forward to saying hello properly!
Do people have any good ideas contacts for music/prizes/entertainment that we could look to get involved? It’d be great to do something a bit different to raise some cash that has ‘Brum’ written all over it. Lets make it fun and quirky!
Finally, is there a better space to have this conversation now to get more people involved? No reason it needs to stay here….
um, not sure how I can help – wbut if i can do something to make the actual meeting something more exciting than people in a room — games, music, whatever — then I will.
Would be well up for helping with this. Venues, hmmm……The Victoria’s nice, near Alexandra Theatre. Poss bit small? Rainbow would be good. Could help out with Digbeth old man pubs like Spotted Dog but suspect that’s not what you’re after ; )
Im already a bit nervous about the amount of stuff Im planning to do this year, but thats said, I would like to keep in the loop with this and chip in as I can.

I’m happy to help with some organising. Island Bar might be a good venue idea, it is central, next door to the Alex Theatre. They have a good sized room upstairs, very friendly staff.
I was going to mention Island Bar or The Victoria – both of which have function room bits with a stage/PA/decks if needed.
There’s not long left to start roping in sponsors. Did you see who sponsored the first Twestival? Tech start-ups, printers, web hosting companies, book publishers and the like. I wouldn’t have a clue about how to approach people for that though.
